In modern vehicles, the suspension coil spring is one of the most demanding components. It influences handling, road-holding and brake behavior. In the event of a coil spring break, the braking distance increases and handling deteriorates. Since springs mostly break at the lower end, a defective spring is not easily detected and drivers simply get used to the slightly abnormal handling under normal driving conditions. To minimize the risk of spring breaks, suspension coil springs should be checked at regular intervals, e.g. when changing summer/winter tires. Broken or heavily corroded suspension coil springs should always be replaced in pairs per axle.
